AI-Assisted Commerce: Read the Evidence, Improve Product Information
Separate AI referrals, influenced sales and delegated purchases. Use scoped research, accurate product information and measured tests to choose your next step.
v1.1 · October 2026 · Tenten GEO Research
CH.01
What the Published Figures Measure
Growing AI use can support a test. It does not establish that human shoppers or product pages have been replaced.
Shopify reports more than 8x year-over-year AI-referred sessions and nearly 13x orders in Q1 2026. These are referrals to Shopify storefronts, not a count of autonomous agent purchases. The published post does not provide a complete reproducible cohort or raw dataset.
Salesforce’s January 8, 2026 release estimates AI and agents influenced 20% of retail sales, US$262 billion, during November 1–December 31, 2025 through recommendations and customer engagement. McKinsey’s October 17, 2025 report projects US$3–5 trillion of global B2C goods commerce could be orchestrated by 2030, using adoption and merchant-readiness assumptions. A forecast is not observed orders or your future revenue.
Next step
Keep each publisher’s period, population and definition attached to its figure. Do not combine referral growth, influenced sales and forecasts into one autonomous-order market.

CH.02
Different Shopping Tasks, Different Access Paths
AI may help a person compare products, send a visitor to a page or execute an authorized task. Verify the actual product and mode before designing an integration.
Product pages, feeds and APIs can complement each other. McKinsey describes agents interacting with websites as well as APIs. Do not assume every assistant ignores visual pages or that every merchant needs a checkout API.
| Stage | Customer task | Possible AI-assisted path | Information to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Find a suitable product | Search or a supported catalog | Clear product page and accurate eligible feed |
| Comparison | Check fit and alternatives | Page content or structured fields | Specifications, units and compatibility |
| Trust | Assess reliability and terms | Linked sources and merchant information | Genuine evidence, returns and warranty |
| Checkout | Approve price and purchase | Merchant checkout or supported authorized integration | Current stock, total cost and user authorization |
Task examples, not a universal agent sequence or selection algorithm.
Shopify’s nearly 50% higher AI-referral conversion applies to Q1 2026 sessions beginning on product detail pages, compared with organic search. It does not describe all visitors, all merchants or autonomous checkout; the page itself remains part of the measured journey.
Next step
Choose the access path used by your buyers. Preserve clear pages and checkout while improving data where a supported integration needs it.
CH.03
Fix Observable Information Problems
Start with a mismatch you can reproduce, rather than assume an invisible agent rejection caused a revenue change.

Keep important specifications in readable text as well as images. Match units, variants, price and stock across the product page and any feed. Accurate data helps comparison, but completeness is not a published universal ranking weight or a guarantee of selection.
Symptom 1
Make key specifications readable
Add important dimensions, materials and compatibility to accessible product text. Images remain useful; do not assume every system can or cannot interpret them.
Symptom 2
Replace vague claims with supported details
Use verified specifications and explain what a measurement means. Do not invent values or turn descriptive claims into certifications.
Symptom 3
Resolve page/feed discrepancies
Compare the same variant and timestamp. Record the source of truth and update failures; do not infer that a mismatch automatically changes an assistant’s trust score.
A missing referral does not reveal why an assistant omitted a product. Check access, eligibility, query fit and measurement gaps, and record unknown causes.
Next step
Improve the facts people and supported systems can verify. Keep the brand presentation useful; factual clarity and good design can work together.
CH.04
Compare Conversion with the Right Denominator
A channel comparison must define the visit, completed action, time window and attribution model.
Kaiser and Schulze’s Marketing Science study uses 973 websites. Its main six-month model covers February 2–August 2, 2025 and compares website sessions that result in transactions. Affiliate conversion odds are estimated about 86% higher than organic ChatGPT-referral odds after model adjustments. This is not AI converting 86% below affiliate, a 14-of-100 index or a data-readiness experiment.
Last-click channel labels miss earlier discovery influence. This cohort and Shopify’s Q1 2026 product-page cohort differ in period, platforms, filters and method. Neither establishes your conversion rate or proves that product-data gaps caused the difference. On your site, compare transactions per eligible session alongside sample counts, revenue, margin and attribution limits.
Next step
Use your observed funnel to diagnose a problem. Test a specific change; do not treat a cross-site association as proof of a cause or a guaranteed gain.
CH.05
A Product-Information Worklist
Use the following checks where the channel and merchant integration actually apply.
Front 1
Maintain a supported product feed
If an applicable platform accepts a feed, follow its current fields and delivery requirements. Check updates against the storefront; a feed is not required for every AI discovery path.
Front 2
Describe real product facts
Keep visible text and any Product/Offer markup consistent with actual variants, prices and availability. Add ratings only when genuine and eligible; markup does not guarantee display or recommendation.
Front 3
Check access and authorization
Review intended crawler roles and privacy rules. Use APIs or checkout integrations only for a supported task with security and explicit authorization, not as a blanket requirement.
| Area | Observable issue | Acceptance evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Product data | Page/feed variant or price mismatch | Same item and timestamp checked against source of truth |
| Specifications | Important facts available only in artwork | Accurate accessible text and consistent fields |
| Trust | Unsubstantiated rating or unclear policy | Evidence and readable current terms |
| Access | Intended fetch fails | Role-specific authorized access tested |
| Measurement | Unclear channel or purchase count | Defined sessions, transactions, period and known gaps |
Practical checks, not a claim that 100% field coverage guarantees selection.
Next step
Prioritize a verified mismatch by buyer impact, effort and risk. Keep unresolved causes explicit rather than promise that engineering alone wins the channel.
CH.06
Choose the Next Test from Your Own Evidence
A market forecast does not dictate a fixed three-year spending plan.
Begin with your actual referral volume, buyer questions and product-information failures. Select a small test with a named owner, cost limit and measurable outcome. These stages are a suggested workflow, not a deadline or a claim about lost revenue.
| Stage | Decision evidence | Work | Review criterion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline | Current scoped sessions, orders and known gaps | Document definitions and reproduce a mismatch | Usable baseline; missing data labeled |
| Bounded test | Supported channel and buyer need | Correct the selected information or integration issue | Check consistency and comparable outcomes |
| Continue, adjust or stop | Observed benefit, cost and uncertainty | Keep useful work; revise or stop the test | Decision supported without selection or revenue promises |
Suggested decision stages; no mandatory timing or default-choice guarantee.
Retain the human purchase experience and accurate machine-readable information together. Broader integration depends on actual demand, platform support, authorization and operating capacity, not a forecast alone.
Next step
Improve one verifiable problem, measure the result and decide the next investment.
