ChatGPT Product Feeds: Current Fields and Delivery Paths
Choose between Shopify Catalog and an approved direct-feed integration. Check the current Stable fields, snapshot and API update paths, product eligibility, and truthful price and stock data. A valid feed does not guarantee display or recommendation.

CH.01
Choose the product-data path before building a feed
A direct feed is one way to supply product information, not the only way products can be discovered. First check your commerce platform, product eligibility, target market, and available integration. Discovery, paid advertising, and checkout have separate requirements.
OpenAI’s March 24, 2026 announcement focused on product discovery and merchant checkout choices. It did not establish that every Instant Checkout experience had ended. Current shopping help still describes Instant Checkout for some eligible products and merchants. Shopify’s ChatGPT channel sends buyers to the merchant’s online-store checkout.
Eligible Shopify products can be shared through Shopify Catalog without an individual direct-feed integration. Shopify’s current ChatGPT requirements include selling to US customers, Catalog eligibility, required policies, and acceptance of its terms; a merchant can be based elsewhere. B2B-only products are not supported on that storefront path. Check your own eligibility and controls rather than assuming every store is included.
For a direct integration, OpenAI’s current onboarding is for approved partners. Confirm the supported delivery method and schema before building. No verified daily shopping-query count or guaranteed visibility gain is needed to make this decision. Public-web and other listing routes can still expose products without a direct feed.
| Data path | Who it applies to | Practical next step | Official reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Catalog | Eligible products and stores; US-buyer and platform requirements apply | Check eligibility, product data and Catalog access in Shopify | Shopify: Selling on ChatGPT |
| Approved direct feed | Merchants with confirmed OpenAI onboarding | Confirm Stable schema, delivery method and target market | OpenAI: Get Started and Products |
| Other discovery routes | Public information and external listings may remain discoverable | Do not equate Catalog opt-out or no direct feed with total invisibility | Shopify: Catalog and product discovery |
Choose a supported route; none of these paths guarantees a product recommendation.

Chapter Takeaway
Check the path you already have before building another feed. Eligibility and access make data available; they do not reserve a place in a shopping answer.

CH.02
Use the schema for your confirmed integration
The current supported file-upload reference has a Stable schema. Its Draft view is for planning and feedback, not production. The table below covers the OpenAI-format discovery fields, not every API or platform schema.
The file-upload guide currently supports parquet, jsonl.gz, csv.gz, and tsv.gz via SFTP. Do not assume any CSV/TSV/XML/JSON export is interchangeable. Google-compatible imports have their own mappings and validation; API delivery is another path. Confirm your onboarding contract before adapting an existing feed.
The Stable OpenAI format requires nine fields below. Google-compatible files instead require eight source columns and use the registered merchant name; identifiers and variant fields can be conditional. Optional unknown values should be omitted, not invented. Eligibility does not guarantee display, and a malformed row does not necessarily reject the whole feed.
| Field | Category | Key Rule |
|---|---|---|
| item_id | Required in this Stable format | Stable string ID per item or variant within the feed; never reuse for a different item. |
| title | Required in this Stable format | Factual product name; identify the selected variant when relevant. |
| description | Required in this Stable format | Plain factual description of this item, without unsupported claims. |
| url | Required in this Stable format | Public product-detail URL; select the variant when possible and keep the URL stable. |
| brand | Required in this Stable format | Real product brand matching the product page; not a placeholder. |
| seller_name | Required in this Stable format | Name of the seller supplying this offer; distinct from a marketplace when applicable. |
| image_url | Required in this Stable format | Public direct URL for the main image showing this variant; no universal white-background requirement. |
| availability | Required in this Stable format | Use in_stock, out_of_stock, pre_order, backorder, or unknown as applicable. |
| price | Required in this Stable format | Current regular price written as amount and currency, consistent with the product. |
Nine required fields in the current Stable OpenAI-format discovery feed. Google-compatible mappings and API contracts differ.
Chapter Takeaway
Use this table for the stated format only. GTIN is optional in this format, while Google-compatible identifier rules can be conditional. Do not mix aliases, variant rules, Ads flags, and checkout requirements into a universal seven-field checklist.
CH.03
Keep data current through the agreed delivery path
Accurate price and availability help shoppers make decisions. Publication, upload, processing, and the displayed answer are different stages; successful transmission does not mean an instant change in every response.
If the product page and feed disagree, a shopper can encounter the wrong price or stock status. Investigate the source data and processing record. This is a real operational problem, not evidence that the model learned distrust or applied a specific ranking penalty.
OpenAI’s file-upload guide recommends full catalog snapshots at least daily. Get Started separately recommends API updates during the day, or API-only delivery for a small feed. It does not establish a universal 15-minute refresh or display deadline. Match updates to the supported integration and the volatility of your data.

Frequency
Separate snapshots from incremental updates
For file delivery, send a complete snapshot on the agreed cadence; the current guide recommends at least daily. Use API updates only through the confirmed API integration.
Trigger
Respond to changes without promising instant display
Capture price, stock, and sale changes in your source system, then deliver them by the supported route. Event-driven work is an operational option, not a universal ingestion guarantee.
Consistency
Reconcile the actual offer
Check the same variant, currency, market, price, and stock across the feed, product page, and checkout. Distinguish regular and sale prices and do not invent missing values.
Monitoring
Monitor delivery and processing
Record upload success, processing status, errors, and data age. Choose alert severity by actual business impact; a failed job alone does not prove all products disappeared.
Chapter Takeaway
Keep snapshots complete and updates appropriate to the supported route. Measure delivery and processing separately from display. Treat any review cadence as an operating plan, not a guaranteed recommendation deadline.
CH.04
Describe the product accurately, without selection promises
Complete, factual data can help represent products accurately. It does not provide a measured conversion from attribute completeness to recommendation probability.
Supply the facts a shopper needs for this item and variant. Do not claim to know an internal confidence threshold or that every incomplete product is automatically skipped. Selection also depends on the user’s request and product context.
Use real size, color, material, and other relevant attributes supported by your chosen schema. Omit unknown optional data. Check conditional variant and identifier requirements instead of adding every possible field.
| Field | Information problem | Clearer factual representation |
|---|---|---|
| title | Promotional words without identifying the item | A factual product name and relevant variant attributes |
| description | Vague text missing useful facts | Supported uses, material, dimensions and limitations |
| image_url | Inaccessible URL or image of the wrong variant | Accessible main image showing the actual variant; relevant additional views if supported |
Three practical data checks, not a forecast of selection odds.
Chapter Takeaway
Correct the information, not an imagined algorithm weight. Useful descriptions and truthful attributes help users compare; they do not guarantee that ChatGPT will select the product.
CH.05
Investigate feed errors from observable evidence
Check row validation, processing, source-data accuracy and shopper-facing information. Do not infer silent exclusion or a hidden ranking penalty from a missing recommendation alone.
Use your validation and processing records to diagnose data issues. A valid record may still not be displayed; other rows may continue processing when some rows are rejected. Recommendation absence alone does not identify the cause.
- →Price mismatch: reconcile the same item, currency and promotion across feed and site; do not label it a learned trust penalty.
- →Stock lag: update the actual availability value when stock changes; do not claim instant processing.
- →item_id reuse: keep identifiers stable and never assign one to a different item; do not invent a historical reputation reset.
- →Thin description: add relevant supported facts, without promising that longer text wins a citation.
- →Image issue: check public access and the correct item/variant, not an unsupported universal ban on lifestyle photography.
- →Currency or units missing: follow the chosen schema’s money and measurement conventions.
- →Refresh failure: investigate delivery, processing and data age; alert according to impact.
| Pitfall | Observable problem | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Price inconsistent | Shopper may see a different offer | Reconcile item, currency and regular/sale price |
| availability out of date | Shown stock may not match the item | Deliver the current value through the supported route |
| item_id reused | Records may be matched to the wrong item | Use stable distinct item and variant identifiers |
| Description lacks facts | Shopper has insufficient information | Add accurate relevant facts and omit unsupported claims |
| Delivery or processing failure | Data may remain stale; extent must be investigated | Inspect processing records and alert on data age |
Observed data problem → practical consequence → investigation; no implied ranking weights.
Chapter Takeaway
An absent product is not a diagnosis. Separate eligibility, ingestion, processing, data accuracy and display. For OpenAI-format snapshots, omission can retain the last record for up to 14 days; is_eligible_search=false affects the next processed snapshot. Google-compatible controls differ, so confirm the path before trying to remove an item.
CH.06
A route-specific launch and operating checklist
Validate the integration you actually use. This checklist is Tenten’s practical worklist, not a timed guarantee or a claim about every client deployment.
Check eligibility and the confirmed schema, then validate data, delivery and processing. Preserve the distinction between successful ingestion and a product appearing in an answer. Use current provider instructions; do not turn a draft schema or a third-party article into a production contract.
01
Confirm the route and format
Check Shopify Catalog eligibility or approved direct onboarding. For file upload, use the supported Stable reference and confirmed SFTP formats; API delivery follows its separate contract.
02
Validate the correct required fields
Use the nine Stable OpenAI fields or the applicable Google-compatible mappings. Check conditional identifiers, variants and markets; do not treat every schema as the same seven fields.
03
Supply known optional data
Add relevant supported attributes and identifiers that actually exist. Omit unknown optional values; completeness does not guarantee recommendation.
04
Set a supported update plan
Use complete snapshots at least daily as currently recommended and API updates where enabled. Record data age and processing; no universal 15-minute promise.
05
Reconcile the same offer
Compare the same variant, market, currency, regular or sale price and stock across feed, page and checkout.
06
Check product representation
Verify public image and product URLs, factual description and correct variants. Preserve required legal disclosures and applicable policy eligibility.
07
Validate processing and monitor
Review processing results and row errors; keep identifiers and shard names stable. Monitor data age and removal rules, then observe relevant shopping answers without expecting guaranteed inclusion.
| Check Item | Pass Criteria |
|---|---|
| Chosen path validates | No unresolved relevant validation errors |
| Applicable required and conditional fields | All requirements for the confirmed schema satisfied |
| price consistent | Same across feed/page/checkout |
| Current availability | Current value delivered and processing checked |
| Refresh alerts | Delivery, errors and data age monitored |
| Accurate product representation | Correct item, accessible images and supported facts |
Confirm the integration’s actual requirements; optional and inapplicable fields are not automatic failures.
Final Word
A valid feed improves the quality of information available through its supported path. It does not guarantee display, recommendation, traffic, or sales. Choose a relevant route, verify data and processing, and measure observed outcomes separately.
Sources & Methodology
Revised against current OpenAI and Shopify documentation reviewed on October 5, 2026 (Taipei). The field table is the Stable OpenAI-format file-upload discovery schema; Google-compatible, API, Ads and checkout requirements are separate. Earlier unverified traffic/adoption figures and conceptual selection-odds bars are retired, without declaring them false. The operating checklist is Tenten’s recommendation, not measured client performance.
