Strategy Playbook Whitepaper
Plan Useful Content Around Reader Questions
Organize explanations, comparisons and tutorials around real reader needs. Interpret AI Overview studies with the right dates and denominators, without guaranteed citations or conversion rates.

CH.01
Keep the Whole Reader Journey Useful
Product, pricing and explanatory pages serve different tasks. A study of query intent does not determine whether an individual page is valuable or eligible for an AI answer.
AIO appearance, a page being cited and a visitor converting are separate events. Match the page to the reader’s question instead of assigning every informational page a guaranteed trigger or excluding product pages.
Keep accurate scope, pricing and product information easy to find. Add explanatory content when it resolves a real question; do not move resources merely because a funnel label sounds better.
| Page type | Reader task | What to observe | Practical role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product / pricing / features | Understand scope, cost and suitability | Relevant queries, sources and actual usage | Support an informed purchase decision |
| Definition guide | Understand a term or concept | Whether the explanation answers the task | Clarify with necessary context |
| Comparison | Evaluate alternatives | Accuracy, conditions and reader needs | Explain differences without guaranteed shortlisting |
| Tutorial | Complete a task | Clarity, completion and relevant questions | Provide actionable steps and an optional next step |
Reader roles, not universal AIO-trigger ratings.
Start with a real need
Choose the page that helps the reader. Product and informational content can both matter; neither automatically earns an AI citation.

CH.02
Read Study Percentages in the Right Direction
The share of AIO queries that are informational differs from the share of informational queries that show an AIO. Samples and dates also differ.
Ahrefs’ September 2025 desktop sample reports 99.9% informational among AIO queries, but 21.4% AIO among informational queries. Intent labels overlap. These are not an almost-certain trigger for any question or a result for every AI product.
Semrush reports 91.3% informational among AIO queries in January 2025 and 57.1% in October 2025. That composition changed; neither percentage is a timeless rule. Do not average these samples or use them to promise selection of your page.
- →State the denominator before using a percentage.
- →Keep the date, surface and sample visible; vendor databases are not your audience’s entire search activity.
- →Use scoped observations for the actual questions you serve, not a universal informational-content guarantee.
CH.03
Organize Related Pages When It Helps
A hub and related pages can help navigation and avoid duplicated explanations. A cluster is optional, not a prerequisite for citations.

Write the main answer early when it helps the reader, with necessary qualifications. CXL observed 55% of 100 sampled AIO citations within the first 30% of pages: that describes location among citations, not the probability of being selected. No word position guarantees citation.
Definitional
Explain the concept
Give a clear definition with the context and limits required. A single sentence or special schema is not mandatory.
Comparison
Compare fairly
Use accurate differences, conditions and evidence. Inclusion in a comparison does not guarantee a place on a buyer’s shortlist.
How-to
Help complete the task
Provide real steps and indicate relevant products only when they help. Let the reader choose; do not turn every explanation into an advertisement.
Use links for the reader
Connect related material when useful, avoid redundant pages and maintain the evidence. One good page can be preferable to an unnecessary cluster.
CH.04
Offer a Relevant Next Step
Some readers want only information; others want to compare or contact you. No universal AI-referral conversion multiple follows from an informational page.
An AI link is not proof of endorsement, trust or purchase readiness. Use available referral and lead records to understand actual behavior, with collection and attribution limits.
Keep the explanation useful on its own. Where relevant, link to an existing product, price or diagnostic route with a clear purpose. A citation need not produce a visit, and a visit need not produce a qualified lead.
Measure what happens
Separate citations, visits, successful requests, qualified leads and revenue. Do not treat an observed association as incremental revenue caused by the content.
CH.05
Prioritize Actual Needs and Capacity
Choose work by customer relevance, evidence and effort. A score can help discussion, not predict guaranteed AI selection or sales.
Consider actual questions, available search observations, current explanations and responsible implementation capacity. Sparse competing content may reflect weak demand or missing expertise, not an automatic opportunity.
| Dimension | Question | Evidence | Planning use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reader relevance | Does a real question need an answer? | Customer questions and usage records | Explain priority |
| Observed search behavior | What appears for our actual questions? | Dated, scoped observations with failures | Context, not a selection probability |
| Content gap | What is inaccurate or unclear? | Specific missing explanations or support | Define a useful change |
| Expertise and capacity | Can we deliver responsibly? | Sources, permissions, expertise and effort | Choose feasible scope |
Qualitative planning aid, not calibrated weights or a causal ranking formula.
Choose a manageable change, including improvement of an existing page. Revisit priority when meaningful evidence changes; do not produce more pages simply to fill a cluster.
CH.06
An Adaptable Content Planning Example
Use existing periods to organize work, not promise citation, revenue or a required thirteen-week commitment.
Inventory useful pages before creating new ones. Keep access, accuracy and reader navigation in scope, and assess business outcomes separately from sampled search behavior.
| Planning phase | Work | Inspectable output |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1 to 2 · Topic selection | Choose actual questions and review current coverage | Scoped topics and documented needs |
| Weeks 3 to 4 · Build the hub | Improve or create necessary explanations with sources | Reviewed useful pages, not guaranteed cited hubs |
| Weeks 5 to 8 · Grow the satellites | Link comparisons or tutorials where needed | Related pages without duplicated content |
| Weeks 9 to 12 · Wire the money line | Review available referrals and backend-success requests | Scoped behavior record with attribution limits |
| Week 13 · Scale | Assess usefulness, cost and remaining gaps | Continue, maintain, change or stop decision |
Planning example, not a universal schedule or content quota.
- →Keep product facts and explanations useful together; no mandatory funnel order.
- →Put answers where they are easy to understand, without treating placement statistics as citation odds.
- →Keep visibility and business outcomes separate, with comparable samples and clear missing data.
Finish with the reader’s task
Continue only if another change is useful. Maintain completed content and reopen it when facts, products or reader needs change.
Sources & methodology
Revised 5 October 2026. Ahrefs studied 146 million desktop SERPs from September 2025; 99.9% and 21.4% use opposite conditional denominators, with overlapping intent labels. Semrush’s 10M+ keyword study reports 91.3% in January 2025 and 57.1% in October 2025 composition. CXL’s 100-citation placement observation is conditional on already observed citations. The former 14.2%/2.8%/5.1× conversion chart lacks an established matching source for this review and is retired, not declared false.
