Choose Channels with Scoped Citation Evidence
Compare studies by surface, sample and metric before choosing a channel. Use your audience’s questions and observed sources without guaranteed citations or ROI.
v1.1 · October 2026 · Tenten GEO Research
CH.01
Start with the Study’s Scope
A popular domain is not automatically the best place for your next piece of content.
We have not established the source or calculation behind the former 40% cross-engine average. Do not present it as verified, or infer the success of an individual post from a domain’s rank.
| Claim | What evidence can establish | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit leads citations | A rank within a defined sample | Check the surfaces and questions relevant to you |
| Posting guarantees citation | A ranking cannot establish that | Participate usefully, without promising selection |
| One social platform suits everyone | Study populations differ | Choose by reader needs and feasible work |
A framework for reading evidence, not a universal channel ranking.
Define the question first
Which readers and tasks do you serve? A citation study supplies context, not a budget instruction.

CH.02
Ranks Are Not Citation Shares
Read each platform separately without inventing percentages from a ranking.
Peec’s 31 March 2026 analysis covers 30 million cited sources across five US surfaces. Reddit ranks first or second in each, including first in Gemini. The original page does not support the former 47%/21%/11%/0.1% comparison.
That aggregate ranking does not measure the chance that your post will be cited, audience use or return on spending. Keep questions, region, period and interface explicit when comparing your own observations.
Avoid a false percentage
Retire unmatched comparison bars rather than replace them with another study’s incompatible figures.
CH.03
Compare Formats by Reader Tasks
Video and discussion can both help; neither format always wins.
The former YouTube 16% versus Reddit 10% series lacks an established matching original source in this review. It cannot justify a universal switch to video or a per-post citation probability.
Do not assume all systems consume only transcripts. Faithful captions and clear explanations help readers, while retrieval and audiovisual capabilities differ by product. Choose formats you can maintain and communities where participation is appropriate.
Use a relevant format
A clear video, useful discussion or accurate page may suit different tasks. Do not turn a platform-level observation into guaranteed selection of one item.
CH.04
Keep Single-Brand Results in Context
A vendor’s own observations do not describe every brand.
Superlines reports 34,234 responses across ten platforms from 14 January to 13 February 2026 for its own brand. This is not a 680-million-citation cross-brand study. Its summary does not provide sufficient raw counts and per-platform response denominators to reproduce the reported 615-fold comparison.
| Evidence | Scope | Limit | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superlines observations | Own brand, ten platforms, thirty days | Published summary does not establish a reproducible multiplier | A reason to inspect relevant surfaces separately |
| Former 11% domain intersection | ChatGPT versus Perplexity claim unmatched | Ahrefs’ 11% refers to AI citations versus search top-ten pages, not this intersection | Do not substitute a different denominator |
Different studies are not interchangeable.
Do not infer retrieval mechanisms or universal absence from this sample. A zero, a rounded value, a failed answer and a missing observation are different records.
Keep coverage visible
Compare like questions and interfaces, with eligible answers, URL citations, unlinked mentions and missing data distinguished.
CH.05
Inspect Sources Without a Head-versus-Tail Formula
Your relevant source map need not follow a universal 5%/95% split.
Similarweb’s current US January–February 2026 ChatGPT table does not support the former claim that four large domains usually total under 5%. Its headline total and table-implied denominator also differ; this review does not publish replacement shares without a reconciled method.
| Assumption | What to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Only a large platform matters | Actual sources for your questions | Include useful specialist sources |
| The long tail is automatically better | Reader relevance and evidence | Do not assign a universal opportunity share |
| Citation frequency determines budget | Cost, permissions and real outcomes | Use a bounded business hypothesis |
Observed source diversity is not an automatic revenue opportunity.
Choose useful work
Keep accurate owned pages and legitimate external participation. No need to buy placement or spread content everywhere to fill a presumed long tail.
CH.06
A Scoped Citation-Mapping Plan
The existing days and 20–30 questions are planning examples, not a complete-market or ROI guarantee.
Choose a manageable sample and record what you can actually observe. Repeat comparable questions when useful, and document additions rather than silently changing the population.
DAY 1
Choose relevant surfaces
Use evidence of audience needs. Record interface, region, account context and date; API output may differ from a consumer surface.
DAY 2
Define a question set
Twenty to thirty real questions can start planning, not establish statistical representativeness. Keep intent and wording recorded.
DAY 3-4
Record answers and sources
Separate linked URL citations from unlinked mentions. Keep errors, unavailable answers and absent AIOs visible; do not count missing data as zero.
DAY 5
Summarize with denominators
State eligible answers and coverage for each surface. Preserve raw answers and dated URLs; do not merge incompatible citation-event and answer-level metrics.
DAY 6-7
Choose, maintain or stop
Consider cost and reader usefulness. Track visits, successful requests and qualified leads separately; sampled citations alone do not prove incremental revenue.

Let evidence limit the decision
Use the map as one input, not a guarantee against losses. Select a useful next action, or maintain existing work when no further change is justified.
Sources & Methodology
Revised 5 October 2026. Peec’s March 2026 US five-surface ranking does not establish the former percentages. Superlines’ own-brand 34,234-response January–February sample does not validate the former 680M attribution or a reproducible 615-fold multiplier. Ahrefs’ 11% search-result overlap is not ChatGPT–Perplexity domain intersection. Similarweb’s current US table conflicts with the former universal under-5% claim; headline/table denominator reconciliation remains unresolved. The former Bluefish/Adweek 16%/10% comparison is unmatched in this review. Retiring those charts does not declare all historical figures false. The mapping process is Tenten planning advice, not causal ROI evidence. https://peec.ai/blog/top-domains-cited-by-ai-search-analysis-based-on-30m-sources https://www.superlines.io/articles/ai-search-statistics https://aisearch.similarweb.com/blog/most-cited-domains-llms/ https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-search-overlap/
